A new filter belt should always be broken in at low speeds for about 1 – 2 hours before being loaded with sludge. This ensures that the new belt will track properly into position. Following this belt conditioning procedure will help prevent wrinkles on a newly installed belt.
The machine should be monitored closely during the break-in period. Sludge should not be introduced to the machine until the break-in period has been completed.
The Micronics Engineered Filtration Group recommends that you follow these 6 Steps to Properly Break-in A New Belt Press Belt:
1. Properly adjust the tensioning pressure on both pressure dewatering belts.
2. Start the belt wash water flow and energize the belt drive. Use warm water if available.
3. Increase the belt tension during the break-in cycle. Refer to the following chart for suggested belt tension. Consult your equipment operator’s manual as equipment may vary.

4. Set the belt tension to the desired setting for running the process stream. Generally, both belts will be operated at the same pli setting, not the same hydraulic pressure (psi).
5. After the break-in procedure is completed, readjust to the proper operating settings. Note: Fine adjustment of the steering circuit is best done with the belts moving.
6. Check and readjust after the first week of operation. Running at higher tensions will create a drier cake while running at lower tensions will promote longer belt life.
Always use extreme caution when working around the moving belt. Avoid loose clothing that might become caught in the belt. Properly breaking in new belts on your belt filter press can increase life and prevent premature belt failures.
